In his new one-man show Brit, Jimmy Hogg, delivers an intensely verbose, physically exhaustive monologue, outlining his employment history. From the hilariously morbid and ridiculous trials of work experience at age fifteen to his quest for the perfect career which will fulfill him financially and spiritually. Rambling, meandering, sweating profusely and spitting his words out with vehemence and wry humour, Hogg's performance is a genuine one-man tour de force.

Past Press:

“Jimmy Hogg's hyperactive recounting of his work history and life experiences easily meets the must-see Fringe standard of a half-dozen laughs out loud. This U.K.-bred performer's chummy stage presence makes for a fun and friendly hour of theater; Hogg himself is the central schmuck of every story, but the show holds a universal appeal. Who of us hasn't held a job or two where the unspoken objective was to do nothing, drink pots of sweet milky tea, eat éclairs all day and collect free money? It's crazed, creative and super-cute.”

-Carolyn Petrie, Pioneer Press (Minnesota).

“Anyone who has pounded the pavement looking for a job will more than appreciate Jimmy Hogg’s performance of Curriculum Vitae at Theatre de la Jeune Lune. This British actor has his audience laughing out loud at his energetic tales – first job, worst job, joblessness, and how the elusive search for a “career” fits into the grand scheme of life out on one’s own.
Here’s an actor with an iron grip on characterization, never leaving the audience in any doubt as to whom he is describing as he introduces each new figure – supervisors, co-workers, the girl he’s trying to get to take notice of him. That’s no small task given the pace he sets for himself, carrying us with him through the jobs he never wanted and the ones he falls into, all peopled with colorful characters like “Sandra the Supervisor,” “Sandra not-the-supervisor,” the very tall contractor “C.C.,” and many more.
Between narratives of particular job situations, he offers some philosophical musings about the relationship between job hunting and the search for a meaningful life, as well as some very useful tips on how to fake one’s way to the top of a resume heap. Hogg’s commentary on the treadmill of the nine-to-five file clerk’s nightmarish existence may not be a wholly new idea, but his investment in his story and the people he brings to life are so genuine, it seems refreshingly original. This one’s a keeper.”

-Kim Surkan, mnartists.org (Minnesota)

“Curriculum Vitae is a fast-paced, wild and bumpy ride. Jimmy Hogg has the storytelling ability to make you think he’s talking to just you… great show, great talent.”

-Gwynne Hunt, Rag Magazine (British Columbia)

“…A magnificent performance from Jimmy Hogg… he flings himself about the stage with a ballerina's precision …”

Eye magazine, Toronto (For previous one-man show, Spunked Up A Wall).

“Here's another guy who knows how to work a crowd. Jimmy Hogg is just as charming on stage as he is in person. It's the simplest of conceits - a journey through job, and job hunting, stories accumulated over the years. Could have been dull as dirt in the wrong hands. Jimmy Hogg is clearly the right set of hands. Not only did he know how to tell a story, tell a joke, and physically create and signify the myriad cast of characters he encountered with skill and precision, he also knew just how and when to end his how, how to play with audience expectation, confound it and then reward it. It's just a heck of a lot of fun. He probably doesn't need a glowing testimonial from me, since he's been very effective at packing the house with appreciative audiences. But a glowing recommendation he gets all the same. Highly Recommended.”

–Mathew A. Everett (Minnesota Fringe Official Blogger).

Audience reviews:

"Mr Bean On Crack!" by Charlie Howe: That is a compliment. Jimmy does a spectacular job of keeping the energy high in this one man journey through the career maze. I was laughing throughout at his keen observations and sharp wit. I have seen more than my share of one person shows at Fringe and so I have become a bit jaded about them, but this one is a refreshingly witty and intense show! Put this one on your list now before it sells out (again).

"Very Funny and very smart!" by d r: Definitely worth seeing! Jimmy's sense of humor and his non-stop movement make the entire hour fly by. He reminds me of Robin Williams in his early days, at his best. The premise of writing a CV and the stories related to previous work experience is something everyone can relate to. But, it's not just the premise; it's the way the stories are told. Jimmy's ability to weave one experience after another (with not a second to breathe) is amazing, amusing, and insightful!

"And Now for the Truth!" by Tim Voss: At last the truth about job hunting has been told! Jimmy's directions for, and stories about, working class job hunting were on the mark and had me in tears of laughter. This guy has sharp wit, great movement, self-deprecating humor, excellent timing, a firm grasp of the language, a creative intellect, and a bunch more adjectives. You'll very much regret missing this one.

"Well Done" by Tony Figueroa: Well Written. Well Acted. Well Staged. This show is the best example of what a solo show should be.

"Brilliant!" by Jim Belich: One person shows can be hit or miss, but Jimmy Hogg hits this one out of the park. From the moment he walked out on stage I was captivated, and his energy never let up. Everything from the writing to the physicality was spot-on; a truly polished performance. Jimmy also deserves credit for being out there meeting people and talking up his show; it's what got me there! So fantastic job and cheers!

"see it now!" by emily wurts: jimmy hogg's manic yet sometimes tender performance will have you in hysterics one minute and empathetic the next. his stories of the working world are unique and brilliantly told. follow carefully though, you don't want to miss one word of his fast-paced brit monologue. amazing!

"Exactly what I needed..." by Ka Yang: I went to the 8:30 performance and by this time of the day, I was feeling drained. I needed energy, enthusiasm, and fun...and I got it! Thank you, Jimmy!

"Well done" by Sandra Mason: Witty and funny. Laughed through the whole performance. Best one man show by far!!!

"Deeeeeeoooommmmn!!!" by Courtney McLean: Jimmy moves faster than me on crack, which is FAST. I saw this guy at the Out-Of-Towner Showcase and thought two things - a) I gotta sleep with him and b) I gotta see his show. "A)" was quickly smashed to bits when I met his lovely girlfriend, however, lucky for me I could buy tickets to his show and see it and no one would get hurt. Jimmy has got an unquenchable energy: he blasts through his job history with breakneck speed and luckily for us, he's got twenty million characters up his sleeves and the talent to keep a potentially boring play subject enthralling for an hour.

"I say" by Kristi Lawless: I rather liked this one. We met the artist while waiting in line at another fringe show. He sounded interesting then, and he did not disappoint us. Great body language combined with a sharp wit made for a fun show.

"Pretty great" by Fluffy Singler: Yes, very energetic (Mr. Bean on Crack reference) and the movement was great and hilarious and frenetic. The writing was funny and smart. Subject matter not earth shatteringly unique, and yet his personal stories added that touch, that balance between unique and universal. The tangents were hilarious, his timing was impeccable. (And it's shallow, but it doesn't hurt that he's so damned cute and has a great accent. We Midwesterners are suckers for a nice accent!)

"Way Too Much Fun" by Patrick Curren: By nature I'm reluctant to jump on bandwagons but am forced to this time because of the superlative nature of this show and its performer. As a survivor of downsizing, a veteran of too many temp jobs, and a chronic tweaker of my resume, many bits of this show seemed to jump from right out of my own life experiences. All I can really say is job well done.

"Speaking of Asthmatic 2-Toed Sloths..." by Patrick Pfundstein: ... and Curriculum Vitae was. I went into the show with that sort of low energy level; work, 20 shows and my nearly fifty years dragging my ass to the ground. Curriculum Vitae was a massive shot of comic energy, kicking that butt back up where it belonged. Curriculum Vitae has just enough of all of us in it to resonate a bit stronger than random comedy, and Jimmy charges around telling his tales with energy, perfect timing, and great spirit. This out-of-towner got quite an ovation at the end of the show; an ovation only topped by his statement that he loved the Fringe and hoped to be back next year. This Fringer will be watching for him and waiting for another shot of urethra scrubbing!

"Worth seeing, might want to reserve" by Alexander D: Went to the 8:30 sunday night show, there were less than 10 open seats. So full that we surprised the actor when he came out, paused, gave a big smile, and paused again. With a slight structure based on the structure of a resume, presented really freshly and entertainingly, this was my highlight of Sunday.

"Not for slow people" by Ben San Del: It's clear that lots, LOTS, of work went into the writing and rehearsing of this show. It's an impressive effort, and one that pays off. This guy's got talent.

(Posted on Aug. 9)

"Thoroughly enjoyable." by Latif Nasser: There is no lack of one-person shows at the Minnesota Fringe, but I'll bet you CV is better than the majority of them. Jimmy's masterful physicality, pointed characterizations and his insightful observations make this show sure to please. Bring your whole family ... and particularly that cousin of yours that never really got around to getting employed.

"A cast of thousands......" by jennifer phillips: I know there was only one bio. I saw only one man. Yet I walked away with so many visions of others. Specific, paced well and humourous. I can't wait to get to work and steal some peanuts!
