What the Press Say about Gemma Wilcox’s Performance

“What sets her one-actor, multiple-personality performance apart is the personal nature of the subject matter and the fine distinctions she draws in her characters…We are carried along by the unavoidable truth in [a] young woman's journey as she navigates the perilous challenges of love and work while remaining true to herself…Wilcox moves easily through the nuances of London's class-tinged dialects and accents, mixing vocal virtuosity with imaginative expressions and postures to herald each new personality, establishing a set of instantly recognizable icons that facilitate quick-paced, multi-character conversations.”

- Bob Bows, Variety, Aug, 2006

Wilcox's talent is large enough to fill hearts and minds as she takes on 20 roles in two one-acts she wrote....Her plays are like beautifully crafted short stories, absorbing even if they weren't given the charming and magnetic performance Wilcox offers. She summons men and chickens (you'll see) as well as she does women....a remarkable display of both writing and performance."

- Lisa Bornstein, Rocky Mountain News

(3  1/2 stars!)  "Wilcox is brilliant at transforming back and forth between all her characters, often in mid-sentence. Especially inspired are her furry and feathered characterizations."

Mark Collins, The Daily Camera

Gemma Wilcox is a terrific performer, with a soft, graceful, gentle quality that's very appealing…she plays several characters -- male and female, young and old -- in each, as well as birds, fish and animals. She does this with great skill, simply changing body position or circling on the stage as she moves from one role to another.

- Juliet Wittman, The Denver Westword

"Gemma Wilcox's "The Honeymoon Period is Officially Over" was the gem of the evening"

- Shilanda Woolridge, The Austin American-Statesman

"Gemma Wilcox was the surprise of the evening: She was superb...Wilcox took on multiple roles in a complex, polished, moving piece. It was well-acted and well-written from start to finish"

- Moira Muldoon, The Austin American-Statesman

"Wilcox displays an imaginative approach to theatricality, a rich sensitivity to character, and a winning sense of humor... she is also an actor of considerable craft and distinguishes each character with precision ... The action, cleverly conceived and cleanly executed, reveals a keen observer of human life and an artist committed to getting it right."

Robert Faires, The Austin Chronicle

"Sharp...witty...a terrific piece...with both compassion and humor...one of the best pieces of work I've seen..."

- Frances Babbage, University of Leeds Studio Theatre (UK)

What Audience's say:

Dena Gitterman  5 Stars!
Easily the best show I saw at the festival. Gemma Wilox is brilliant - both as a writer and performer.

Casey Collins  5 Stars!
Wilcox is a Gem. Her ONE WOMAN show is a not to be missed event at The Fringe. Her turncoat character showcase displays the art of relationship with range and clarity few actresses can physically possess. It's easy to step inside her womanly world of wonder whether she's doing it through a man's trousers or a plant's pot. I laughed, no, I REALLY laughed. Most importantly, I walked away feeling that all human life is worthy of artistic rendering...

Jodee Spalding  5 Stars!
This was the most inspiring, most enlightening performance I've seen in ages. I was awestruck & doing heelclicks when I left.

Melissa Michaels  5 Stars!
Gemma is a master at shapeshifting, elegantly & effortlessly moving from one state of being, one character to another. She brings humor and light to the most mundane and real of human experiences. Gemma has deeply penetrated the human ego, in all our brilliance and vulnerability, offering all who witness her inspired work the opportunity to move into more honest ways of being too. Her work clearly grows out of her own life experience, modeling to all the power of deep inner investigation and compassionate embrace of difficulty in relationship.
